On the 10th of July Naomi Long MP and Baroness Berridge will be co-hosting a parliamentary meeting on religious liberty in the Arab world. Foreign Office Minister for North Africa and the Middle East, Alistair Burt MP, and a senior Egyptian church leader will be among the speakers at this important event.
Open Doors UK are asking you to contact your MP urging them to come and hear about the situation facing Christians in the Arab world and to strenuously promote and protect freedom of religion in that region.
Open Doors say this about the current situation:
‘”The Arab world is going through a tsunami of changes,” says an Arab Christian. And Christians are affected by this political change – or lack of change – in all the countries across the Arab world.
‘Freedom of religion is integral to the promotion of meaningful democracy. But many Christians in the Arab world fear that any new democracy which ignores freedom of religion may be a bigger threat to all religious minorities than the repressive regimes of old.
‘As the UK government formulates policy towards countries in the Arab world it must press for freedom of religion.
‘We are really excited about the event and, already, [as of Monday] 1376 people have emailed their MPs which is a great start.’
You can fill in this simple online form that will take less than five minutes to complete at the Open Doors website. After entering your details an email will be generated that you can personalise if you so wish and then send to your local MP. It’s quick and easy, but by doing so you can use your freedom to do something positive to support those who have none.
Please don’t ignore this. The more people who contact their MP, the more this issue will be given the attention it deserves in parliament.
